Two Years of the Puttaswamy Judgement on The Right to Privacy
Abstract
Mozilla and Internet Freedom Foundation are organising an event to mark the two year anniversary of the unanimous Supreme Court verdict affirming the right to privacy. Nayantara will be speaking on the intersection of the right to privacy and the Puttaswamy judgement with gender and sexual justice issues.
24 August 2019 marks the second anniversary of the Indian Supreme Court’s landmark judgement in KS Puttaswamy v. Union of India. While the 9 judge bench in Puttaswamy unanimously held that privacy was a fundamental right under the Indian Constitution, the true legacy of the case will be determined by how it holds up against the State’s litany of claims about national security and the greater good.
The event aims to both celebrate and critically appraise this watershed moment in Indian constitutional history and discuss the way forward.
