The UN CSTD Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation (WGEC) is due to submit to the CSTD by May 2014 a report with recommendations on how to fully implement the World Summit on the Information Society’s mandate on enhanced cooperation. As an on-site observer at the third meeting of the WGEC, which was devoted to the formulation of such recommendations, the Internet Democracy Project made, together with several other civil society representatives and observers present there, a series of recommendations for the consideration of the WGEC in relation to section B of its report, on public policy issues and possible mechanisms to address them. The recommendations draw on the Internet Democracy Project’s August 2013 submission to the WGEC, as well as on work we have done since then. They were submitted through Joy Liddicoat from the Association for Progressive Communications, one of the official civil society representatives in the WGEC.    More

On 31 August, the Internet Democracy Project submitted its responses to the questionnaire that was made available by the Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation (WGEC) of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) last July. The questionnaire seeks to get input on the broad questions that constitutes the WGEC’s mandate: what is enhanced cooperation as per the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society, and how should it be taken forward? The Internet Democracy Project argued that not a centralised, but a distributed model of Internet governance should constitute the road ahead. Our complete responses can be found below.   More

In preparation for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai, the Hon’ble Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal convened a meeting for all stakeholders, to take their input on India’s draft proposal for the International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs). Following the meeting, the Internet Democracy Project submitted the comments below in writing, as per Mr. Sibal’s request. The inputs shared here were drafted by Rishab Bailey and Anja Kovacs and highlight our most important concerns on India’s draft as conveyed to the Minister, as well as responding directly to requests for input made by the Minister in the meeting. The Internet Democracy Project had earlier submitted to the Government of India a detailed, paragraph-per-paragraph comment on India’s proposal together with four other civil society organisations: the Society for Knowledge Commons, the Centre for Internet and Society, Delhi Science Forum and the Free Software Movement of India.   More

During the Best Bits pre-IGF meeting in Baku, the Internet Democracy Project collaborated with a group of civil society organisations and individuals from around the world to formulate a joint position on the International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs) that will be reviewed at the ITU’s upcoming World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai. After pressure from civil society around to world to increase the transparency and inclusiveness of the upcoming ITU World Conference on International Telecommunications, the ITU has provided a public comments system on which anyone concerned can leave their inputs. The Internet Democracy Project joined forces with four other Indian organisations — the Centre for Internet and Society, Delhi Science Forum, Free Software Movement India and Knowledge Commons — to share the following input.   More
