Tangled, Like Wool: Exploring the Links between Pornography, Gender, Sexuality and Freedom of Speech
Abstract
Anja Kovacs will join the meeting, and will make a presentation that examines the proposed ban on online pornography from the perspective of gender, freedom of expression and the Internet.
‘Tangled, Like Wool’ is a day-long meeting of activists, NGOs, researchers, bloggers, media persons and other stakeholders exploring the links between pornography, gender, sexuality and freedom of speech. The meeting is organised by Point of View and CREA and is a part of the EroTICs India project. The hastag for the meeting is #EroticsDel
As gender, sexuality and Internet rights activists, it is critical for us to develop nuanced positions around pornography, more so against the backdrop of two recent petitions demanding a ban on online pornography in India. We will explore ‘pornography’ from many overlapping perspectives and through various lenses: gender, sexuality, Internet, free speech, the law.
We will discuss key elements of regulating pornography and ‘obscene content’ especially online through laws and policies. We will also discuss state regulation and the links between Internet regulation/deregulation on sexual rights, internet rights and the right to free speech.
This event is by invitation only.
