Using interviews reflecting on-ground stories and experiences in the affected areas of Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir as well as media reports on Internet shutdowns, this important study identifies how such shutdowns impact the lives of people at the micro level, especially in psychological and social terms. Among the study’s important findings is that while national security is often used to justify such shutdowns, citizens actually experience a growing mistrust vis-a-vis the sate in the case of prolonged Internet shutdowns. Such shutdowns thus arguably undermine, rather than further, national security.
